Learn the necessities of school-based practice including tips for success, collecting data, writing an effective IEP and formulating clear goals to most effectively help your students thrive. The differences between IEPs, 504 plans, and Non-classified/RTI/AIS students will be made clear. Emphasis will be on ways to educate members of the team on related services and how to effectively work with parents to ensure that your year runs smoothly.

Nicole Barmen, more affectionately known by her students as Ms. B. is an occupational therapist with 18 years experience in a school-based pediatric setting. She came from a small town in upstate NY and didn’t even know what occupational therapy was in high school. Nicole entered college with interests in careers at opposite ends of the spectrum: Advertising and OT. After a month into the course, Intro to Occupational Therapy, she was hooked and never looked back. Nicole is a graduate of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Nicole has worked in inner city, suburban, and rural school districts. Through contract agencies, she has also worked in a variety of settings, including nursing homes, Day Habs, Home Health, Article 28 sites, preschool, and Early Intervention. She is currently working in a large Suburban school district in both the public and private school setting, as well as working with preschoolers after school. Nicole has two daughters that keep her hopping and enjoys the outdoors and has been attempting to learn to knit in her very limited down time. She hopes to someday write children's books incorporating therapy and children with developmental needs.

Kathryn R. Biel, PT, DPT is a pediatric physical therapist who attended school at Boston University, and received her doctoral degree from The Sage Colleges. She has worked in a variety of settings, including special education schools, a pediatric residential care facility, Early Intervention, preschool and now in the public school setting, with some brief dabbling in an adult outpatient rehab clinic. When she is not busy treating, writing IEP’s, attending meetings and fixing wheelchairs, Kathryn is the mother to two school-aged children and wife to a very patient husband. She can often be found releasing my stress through dance and writing for her own personal blog, Biel Blather, which can be found at www.kathrynbiel.blogspot.com.
