Contemporary NDT has undergone a paradigm shift that promotes thinking and doing in a new way! This course specifically helps therapists provide evidence-based early intervention in order to impact a baby and family’s life. Find out how and why this age is the time to emphasize prevention to maximize outcomes for gross motor, fine motor and respiration. Learn how to enhance developmental outcomes while considering the research that guides decision-making. Optimize ways to support parents in engaging with their children. Analyze development in neurotypical infants and compare to delayed and atypically developing babies and toddlers. An emphasis is placed on functional outcomes appropriate for this age group, and how to incorporate strategies into family life. Case analyses will include developmental delay, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and prematurity.
This course utilizes lecture, labs, and videos.
Course participants will learn to:
- Apply current research findings to increase effectiveness of intervention
- Identify cues of engagement & disengagement
- Apply strategies to assist regulation for calming & organizing in infants & toddlers
- Analyze respiratory, gross motor, and fine motor components and development
- Utilize family-chosen outcomes & observational assessment to guide intervention
- Develop effective strategies for the desired functional outcomes
- Discuss family factors and identify practical home program ideas
During the course please have a doll of about 20″ to 24” with bendable parts, like a rag doll (stuffed animals don’t usually work well). Dolls will be used to practice techniques.
Suzanne Davis Bombria, PT, C/NDT, is an internationally recognized and respected clinician, teacher and consultant in the treatment of children with neuromotor impairments. She is unique in that she brings first-hand practical experience to her profession as the mother of a son who has cerebral palsy. Mrs. Davis Bombria is a Pediatric Coordinator-Instructor for the NDTA. Currently residing in Connecticut, she treats children of all ages, specializing in intensives for children as well as ongoing intervention, and school consultations. She is dedicated to providing insight into contemporary NDT and has had her works published. As one of the investigators in the RCT project titled “Multi-modal intervention for children with cerebral palsy”, Ms. Davis Bombria is versed in current research. More than 300 of her courses have been taught to physical, occupational, and speech therapists around the world including North America, South America, Central America, Australia and New Zealand. Her passion for her work as a pediatric therapist and instructor, along with her easy presentation style, provide the theoretical and practical solutions all therapists all therapists can apply to their patient population.
