Treating Patients in Acute Care and Critical Care Settings: Maximizing Potential

Course Description:

Regardless of the practice setting, therapists are required to recognize increasingly subtle signs and symptoms of activity intolerance because our patients are more complex and exhibit more co-morbidities than ever before. Therefore, in order to maximize the patient’s safety while assisting them to reach their fullest potential, therapists must make treatment decisions quickly and independently based on the best available and clinically obtainable information. This course presents relevant and immediately applicable knowledge to inform the clinical decision making process in any setting.

Through an interactive presentation and an analysis/discussion of case vignettes, as well as a guided classroom application of techniques, participants will review cardiovascular anatomy and physiology as a clinically relevant background to the examination and interpretation of findings, and selection of interventions to enhance patient prognosis and treatment outcome. By exploring the application of clinical monitoring techniques and the interpretation of selected parameters that take their patients’ functional impairments into account, participants will learn how to make better decisions about the interventions they employ and their patients’ responses to them.

Participants will be able to immediately apply course learning to:

  • Discuss the International Classification of Function and Disability (ICF )     framework
  • Incorporate evidence-based resources into the clinical decision making and patient case management processes
  • Understand normal and abnormal cardiovascular function and responses to exercise
  • Discuss the ‘basics’ of: Lines & Tubes, supplemental oxygen and mechanical ventilators
  • Perform appropriate examinations of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems incorporating at least three clinical physiological monitoring techniques
  • Apply clinical reasoning and diagnostic screening to facilitate the patient management process and the assessment of need for referral to other healthcare professionals
  • Relate examination/assessment findings to the development of appropriate therapeutic interventions to safely achieve the fullest potential for complex patients with cardiovascular and/or pulmonary dysfunction
  •  Promote a discussion of ‘early mobilization’ practices
  • Appreciate the functional impact of frequently prescribed medications on patients in the hyper-acute and acute phases of recovery
