VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION FOR THE SCHOOL-AGED CHILD AND ADOLESCENT SERIES Individual Sessions: Understanding the Unique Aspects of the Vestibular System in Children and Adolescents

Course Description:

Children’s vestibular systems differ from adults in both anatomy, physiology and the functional difficulties associated because the vestibular system impacts the development of ocular motor responses, spatial perception, body awareness, attention, memory, balance, and mental imagery. This session focuses on an evidence-based functional anatomy review that is applicable to treatment. Maturation of the child’s vestibular system into an adulthood is discussed along with the development of vestibular reflexes and central processing implications. The instructor covers functional impairments, and the epidemiology of vestibular issues in children. Quality of life issues as they relate to children in school, home and play environments will be discussed.

  1. Identify the anatomy of the vestibular system and its unique properties
  2. Describe the vestibular system, common dysfunction and development and its relationship to vestibular therapy
  3. Summarize developmental considerations that impact treatment the pediatric population
  4. Discuss current epidemiology of pediatric dizziness
