Course Description:

Designed for: Occupational therapists, physical therapists, assistants
and speech-language pathologists

Recognizing the subtle signs of visual and vestibular dysfunction, that significantly impact social skills and school performance, is often the key to designing effective treatment for improved sensory processing, motor skills and behavior in children with a variety of diagnoses.

Through extensive video case analysis of infants, toddlers and school age children, this course examines the role of sensory-motor development and visual-vestibular integration in the development of attention, modulation, visual perception and social skills. Discussion will include biochemical/metabolic issues, assessment techniques including screening tools for behavioral vision issues, innovative treatment techniques, and strategies for sharing information with parents and teachers. While the majority of the case studies are of children, described treatments also have been applied with great success among adults.

Participants will be able to apply course learning immediately to:
• Analyze the role of sensory processing in the development of attention, social skills and visual perception.
• Identify subtle signs of visual-vestibular and other sensory-motor dysfunction
• Apply integrated assessment techniques and how to develop measurable goals
• Identify “red flags” that warrant referral to a behavioral vision specialist
• Develop effective treatment protocols for the clinic and school
• Implement strategies for sharing information with parents and teachers for optimal outcomes.

Credits: 13 contact hours (1.3 CEUs); NY: 15.6 contact hours

What participants say:

“Ms. Dickson did an awesome job of clarifying so many things we see in our children and giving us a clearer understanding of why. After this course, I really feel inspired to implement many of the ideas and strategies into my school programs as well as my home routines. I would definitely recommend this course to other professionals and parents.”
Andrea Calabro, Physical Therapist

“Debra’s course was well organized, packed with valuable information for assessment, goal setting and treatment. She has tapped into one of the missing links. I highly recommend this course.”
Debbie Wilkinson, Physical Therapist

“I came into the conference with an overall understanding of the topic, but Debra helped to expound on that information with specific details on screening, planning and treating. Great job!"
Tony Rubilino, OTR
