Course Description:
Hidden in our everyday pediatric population are children presenting with non-cleft hypernasality, dysmorphology and resonance disorders. Identify and plan treatment for children with underlying hypernasality, despite the etiology. This course will teach you to identify basic genetic malformations, and recognize craniofacial anomalies and explain how these affect breathing, feeding and speech. Assessment and treatment of compensatory articulation patterns will be discussed. Cleft and non-cleft patient populations will be reviewed. Various syndromes including velocardiofacial, apert’s, treacher collins, and goldenhar will be discussed. • Identify basic genetic malformations dysmorphology and common syndromes • Explain when it is appropriate to make a genetics referral • Identify hypernasality in the non-cleft patient • Explain use and rationale of specialty feeding devices for children with cleft palate or velopharyngeal incompetence • Recognize various craniofacial anomalies and explain how these effect breathing, feeding and speech production • Describe the different surgical options for cleft palate and velopharyngeal incompetence • Produce treatment plans for children of all ages with hypernasality, despite their etiology • Assess for and identify compensatory articulation patterns • Interpret structure and anatomy of the velopharyngeal area from watching nasoendoscopies.
