Course Description:

This two-day course will be presented by Dr. Joan
Arvedson, who has extensive clinic, teaching, and research experience in assessment and management of feeding and swallowing problems in infants and children.

A primary goal of the course is to provide clinicians in medical and educational settings with knowledge and skills important for functioning in a team approach. Comprehensive evaluation and management of medically fragile and chronically ill children usually requires multiple professionals working together in an integrated way.

Topics related primarily to infants and young children with feeding and swallowing problems include:
(1) Outcomes, ethical decision making, and medical/surgical/health status;
(2) Clinical evaluation in the NICU, other inpatient units, and outpatient settings,
(3) Decision making with instrumental assessments (flexible endoscopic examination of swallowing [FEES] and major focus on videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), and
(4) Management strategies. Decision making will be stressed throughout with case studies that will include children with problems that result from and/or are complicated by airway, neurologic, and gastrointestinal factors. Participants will learn through lecture, videos, and interactive discussion for problem solving in making comprehensive management plans.
(Intermediate to advanced level).

What others are saying:

“Joan Arvedson is a wonderful presenter/teacher. She is truly a clinician’s clinician with her functional, ‘whole child’ approach. What a wealth of experience and information!”
Leticia McAfee, SLP

“As an occupational therapist, it is very difficult to find a course that teaches several different methods of evaluation and treatment for feeding and swallowing disorders. Dr. Arvedson did an amazing job brining different presentation methods to offer ways to evaluate and treat feeding disorders. I would recommend this course to any therapist that is interested in learning about feeding and swallowing difficulties.”
Shahnoor Dharamsi, OT

“Dr. Arvedson is extremely interesting and provides excellent case studies that are relevant to her topics. She is highly knowledgeable and provides a lot of functional information…I highly recommend this course!”
Jennifer Stein, SLP

“Dr. Arvedson was an extremely brilliant speaker. She presented this information in a professional way but made it easy for the entire audience to understand…I will definitely look forward to taking another course from her.”
Angelia Brown, SLP
