Mary Ann Sharkey

Mary Ann Sharkey, PhD, MS, PT, C/NDT was named the2011 Distinguished Educator by the American PhysicalTherapy Association, Education Section. She has presentedpreconferences most recently at the past twoCombined Sections Meetings for the APTA. She has adoctoral degree in anatomy with a specialty in neuroscienceand a masters in allied health education. Shehas treated from the neonatal intensive care unit to olderchildren with neurological involvement and been employedin diverse geographical settings from Ohio,California, South Carolina, New Mexico, Washingtonand most recently North Carolina. She has taught inphysical therapy programs and taught in NDT coursesand conferences. Her diverse experience has lead her
to believe that we need to be inclusive of numerousstrategies to treat children. The strategies used are allrelated and dependent on the diagnosis of the impairmentinhibiting the childs functional limitation. Thisclinical expertise is highlighted by her passion for neuroscienceand its implications for intervention and hercritical review of evidence as it relates to therapy.
