Therapeutic Management of the Complex Neonate: Cardiac, Respiratory, Neurologic Challenges in the NICU, PICU, SICU and EI Settings

Course Description:

This course will provide the advanced clinician with an in-depth review of the developmental consequences of infants born with Cardiac, Respiratory and/or Neurologic Diagnoses. Starting with embryology, anatomy and physiology provides clinicians with a solid understanding of the physiologic obstacles in which they must overcome in their evaluations and treatment sessions. A review of medical interventions for these diagnoses will further the audience’s knowledge and improve their management strategies when working closely with other medical professionals. Information for both full-term and pre-term infants will be provided, along with the current literature reporting upon these infants’ long-term outcomes. Functional information will be a strong focus of this course, which ensures the audience can immediately apply strategies to use with their caseloads. Such topics include neuro-developmental care for handling, positioning, oral care, feeding/swallowing and sensory processing strategies. Accompanying therapy frequency and intensity recommendations will be discussed. A strong focus on developmental appropriateness, research efficacy and parent-training is intertwined into the material to help support rationales made for each problem and age.  Each topic will be accompanied by recommended readings or lectures for continued learning outside of this course. The use of videos and real life experience makes this course engaging, interactive and functional to any provider looking to make real progress with the children on their caseload with complex medical issues.
