Managing Swallowing and Communication Function in Trach/Vent Dependent Patients

Course Description:

This course offers a comprehensive, systematic approach to management of communication and swallowing function in medically fragile patients, particularly those who are tracheostomized and/or ventilator dependent. This interactive course will give you the skills to make decisions with regard to safe and efficient nutrition, management of swallowing disorders, and functional communication systems. Treatment implications for each medical method for altered respiration trach/vent dependency, and laryngectomy will be discussed in detail. Participants will gain confidence working with this complex population.

Participants will be able to apply course learning immediately to:
Make decisions regarding nutrition, communication and swallowing for the medically complex patient.
Utilize knowledge of anatomy and physiology of normal and abnormal respiratory systems, including respiratory insufficiency requiring mechanical ventilation or tracheostomy, as well as medical alterations to the respiratory tract (eg. laryngectomy) to modify treatment.
Discuss the effects of respiratory insufficiency, artificial airways, mechanical ventilation, laryngectomy, and acute/chronic illness on swallowing function.
Employ a systematic approach using instrumental and non-instrumental methods for assessing individuals with tracheostomy/ventilator dependency, and laryngectomy.
Implement a comprehensive swallowing program for individuals with tracheostomy/ventilator dependency.
Identify communication options for the non-vocal patient.
