Adult Dysphagia: Treatment and Clinical Decisions in Complex Patients

Course Description:

The course focuses on providing a solid base for clinical decision making in dysphagia management. Techniques that facilitate interpretation and communication of swallowing findings will be discussed. Therapy strategies such as E-Stim will be presented using evidence based guidelines. The course will focus on adult swallowing disorders with special emphasis on issues influencing management such as medications and speaking valves; esophageal swallowing disorders; tackling nutrition and hydration issues at the end of life and the role of the therapist on the Palliative Care Team

Participants will be able to apply course learning immediately to:

  • Apply anatomy and physiology of swallowing to dysphagia management.
  • Improve communication of swallowing disorder findings with dysphagia patients, care givers and medical team.
  • Discuss the impact of medications and the use of speaking valves on managing patients with dysphagia.
  • Summarize the role of E-Stim techniques in managing Dysphagia
  • Participate in difficult decisions regarding nutrition and hydration issues at the end of life.
  • Participate in managing patients with Esophageal Swallowing disorders.
